This past weekend was a festive one at CNR, as alumnae from the classes ending in 4s and 9s returned to their alma mater one last time to renew friendships and reminisce about their college years during Alumnae College 2019.

The weekend kicked off on Friday evening with a reception in the Mooney Center Gallery, where the special exhibit “Honoring Our Ursuline Sisters and Their Legacy” was on display, followed by a barbecue on Maura Lawn.

The weather was spectacular on Saturday, when hundreds of alumnae gathered in Maura Ballroom for greetings from both CNR President Dr. William Latimer and Mercy College President Timothy Hall, and to hear a panel of alumnae who offered their personal reflections on CNR.

Though she transferred to CNR as a junior, Eileen Mainzer Church SAS’83 shared how she had made lifelong friends at CNR that she still sees regularly. Claudia Benitez SAS’16 echoed that sentiment when she described the deep sense of belonging she felt at CNR from the start. Sharing her feelings on CNR closing, Patricia Bennett SNHP’98 said she expected to carry the sadness for a while but would carry on to show her gratitude for the excellent education she had received and for the tradition of the Ursulines.

Later, during the awards ceremony, two alumnae were recognized with Women of Achievement awards for brilliant accomplishments in their chosen career: Kathleen O’Connor SAS’64 and Mary McGahan SAS’74, while seven alumnae were honored with the Angela Merici Medal for exceptional loyalty to Church and the College and distinctive achievements in their careers: Ann Pfohl Kirby SAS’49, Maura Dausey SAS’59, Jean Lilly Sweeney SAS’59, Joan Fiori Blanchfield SAS’64, Janice Conlon Collins SAS’69, Mary Corcoran Jigarjian SAS’69, and Mary Beth Gentleman SAS’74. Sixteen alumnae received the Ursula Laurus Citation in recognition for their outstanding leadership and generous devotion to furthering the high ideals and rich traditions of Ursuline education: Virginia Walsh Furtwangler SAS’54, Marie Trombacco Gianzero SAS’59, Mary Clare Freaney Dooley SAS’64, Sandra Smith Gangle SAS’64, Anne Pooler SAS’64, C. Suzanne Smith Poppe SAS’64, Linda Reichman Gilmartin SAS’69, Angela Griffiths SAS’69, Anne Hoey Logan SAS’69, Claire Colangelo Manto SAS’69, Mary Jo Rocque Pittoni SAS’69, Joanne Smith Romalewski SAS’69, Karen Caulfield Calo SAS’79, Marianne Jablosky Funch SAS’79, Siboney Zelaya SAS’99, and Amy Pettengill SAS’04.

After enjoying a delicious buffet lunch, classes spent the afternoon in class meetings and posing for their class photos before Mass in Maura Ballroom. The celebration was capped off on Saturday evening with dinner in the Castle Parlors for the 50th Reunion Class of 1969, while other classes enjoyed dinner at Posto 22 in downtown New Rochelle.

With another reunion weekend concluded, alumnae departed with many more wonderful yet poignant memories made to be cherished for years to come, since for most, this would mark the final visit to their beloved campus.
