Dr. Roblyn Rawlins
Roblyn Rawlins has published and presented research on mothers’ clubs, the history of child-rearing advice books, scientific and popular understandings of early intellectual development in children, the ways in which experts on child-rearing encourage mothers toward discipline and self-control, the practices and motivations of home cooks, and gender, national identity and experiences of public harassment among college students studying abroad. Her current research examines the ways in which young women negotiate issues of food, cooking, identity and family.
Rawlins has published her research in scholarly journals including Women’s Studies and the Journal of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement as well as in numerous chapters in edited books. Her book, Making Dinner: How American Home Cooks Produce and Make Meaning out of the Evening Meal, published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2019 and co-authored with David Livert, is an empirical study of home cooking in the United States that explores how American home cooks think and feel about themselves, food, and cooking that has been called “a very well written and convincing book.”
She has presented her work at meetings of the American Sociological Association, the Eastern Sociological Society, the Association for the Study of Food in Society, the MIRCI International Conference on Mothers and History, the Council for International Educational Exchange, the Society for Research in Child Development, and the Middle Atlantic American Studies Association. She also conducts evaluation research projects for local and state non-profit and governmental organizations. She teaches a broad range of courses in sociology and in the Honors Program, including gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, technology and society, criminology, the sociology of catastrophe, and food, culture, and society.
